Richard Bentley was a late-eighteenth century merchant, and reputedly a bit of a dandy. His bride died on their wedding day, after which he never washed, changed his clothing, nor did any housework. Supposedly the inspiration for Miss Havisham, the jilted bride of similar habits in the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, he became a legend in his own lifetime, with people coming from miles around to pay to see the state of his hardware store. When he retired, the owners of the current pub, then named The Old Jerusalem, bought the contents of the warehouse, and displayed them in the cellar, rotting food, dead cats, the lot, and changed its name to Dirty Dicks.
