Situated opposite the Theatre Royal, this small glass-fronted pub is named after King Charles II’s mistress, the actress Nell Gwyn who had two illegitimate children by him. She was an orange seller originally, but very clever—Samuel Pepys referred to her as “pretty, witty Nell”. Unsurprisingly, the pub has a theatre theme—masks on the walls, autographs and signatures on the ceiling. However, due to the small size of the pub the House Full signs may be more than merely decorative. Across the road from the pub is the Theatre Royal claimed to be one of the most haunted theatres in the world, with several spirits in attendance.
