The Angel fell into disrepair and had an uncertain future until Sam Smiths took it over, and did their usual superlative renovation, saving it from almost certain demolition. Serious structural work was done to prevent it sliding into the Thames, the interior was refurbished, and dark wooden dividers put in returning the pub to its original layout and former glory. There is also a grand riverside view of Tower Bridge, the Shard, The Cheesegrater, the Walkie-Talkie and the Gherkin, and other London landmarks. The bronze statues on the terrace outside form a work named Dr Salters Daydream, and are of Dr Alfred Salter and his wife Ada, late-Victorian philanthropists, their eight-year old daughter Joyce and her pet cat.
