This popular Shepherd Neame pub is named for one of their stronger beers, described by the Kentish brewers as “fruity”, so it’s no surprise that some of the posters on the walls of The Bishops Finger advertise the beer, featuring attractive, voluptuous serving wenches of bygone days, with double entendre statements such as “I love a good session on the Bishops Finger”, or “I get untold pleasure from a Bishops Finger”. Shepherd Neame also claim that it is EU-protected, and can only be brewed by the head brewer on a Friday. Actually, the name “Bishops Finger” has a historical meaning, referring to the finger-shaped signposts directing mediaeval pilgrims to Thomas à Becket's shrine at Canterbury Cathedral.
