Built in 1905, The Blackfriar is a strange wedge-shaped pub, a grade II listed building with an Art Nouveau interior, covered in murals and mosaics, not surprisingly on the theme of friars. The exterior is tiled and decorated with wrought iron signs, with a black friar standing over the front door at the apex of the wedge. Nevertheless, it’s the atmospheric and cosy little interior that’s the most impressive. The walls are beautifully tiled, with wooden floors and a marble bar counter, but what particularly grabs the attention are the murals with the copper figures of monks. It serves a range of excellent cask-conditioned real ales.
