This is Trafalgar Square’s “local”, and is the first experience many tourists have of an English pub. From remarks made on the web, it seems that it doesn’t disappoint, and appears to be liked especially by Americans who find it conforms to their notions of an English pub. It was taken over by Sam Smiths’ in 1984, who have done their usual fantastic job in improving on the original, remodelling the interior, installing booths in the ground floor bar, the usual wooden panelling, and leaded windows. The first floor bar is very civilised and comfortable, with leather sofas creating a quiet and comfortable atmosphere more akin to a gentlemen’s club.
