The Doggett’s Coat and Badge could be included in this guide on the strength of its bizarre name alone, strange even by the standards of British pubs, named after a not very famous boat race, which holds the distinction of being the oldest in the world. It’s also extremely easy to find, dominating the southern end of Blackfriars Bridge, which makes it an excellent starting point. But above all, it is a splendid pub in a superb location beside the Thames, with balconies overlooking the river, a riverside terrace and a pleasant little beer garden. It is one of the Nicholson’s excellent chain of fine drinking (and eating) establishments.
