The Hole in The Wall isn’t just included because of its location directly opposite Waterloo Station and happens to be on our route, nor because it’s an atmospheric watering hole hidden away under the railway lines, obvious from its shape inside—all excellent reasons, no doubt. It’s also included for its history—in the nineteen seventies this was one of the few, and one of the very best real ale pubs in London, a veritable oasis in an otherwise barren desert of vile keg beers and chemical lagers. We owe pubs like it, as well as CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, our gratitude for the high quality of beer available to us today.
