Tucked away on a narrow little backstreet, The Lamb & Flag is probably the most famous pub in Covent Garden, and certainly the oldest and most historic. There has been a pub on this site since 1772, originally the Cooper’s Arms, acquiring its current appellation in 1833. The name Lamb and Flag has a religious origin, the sign showing the Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God, but by the nineteenth century it had lost any pretentions to meekness and had earned a reputation as a venue for bare-knuckle fighting, being nicknamed “The Bucket Of Blood”. It is a Fullers pub, serving their fine cask-conditioned beers and food, including a traditional Sunday roast.
