This was originally the law courts branch of the Bank of England. Two old Fleet Street taverns were demolished for this, but they were avenged when Fuller, Turner and Smith, the London brewers, put it back to better use. The interior is a large single open space, with a central island bar overlooked by a first floor balcony. It is opulent and striking, sumptuously decorated with mural paintings, chandeliers, old wood, tiled floors and high, richly curtained windows. It is also a grade I listed building, which means you can’t knock it down. There may be other reasons for this. Apparently the old bullion vault is now the spirit store. They tried to dismantle it during the conversion, but couldn’t, which isn’t surprising, really.
