The Old Doctor Butler's Head was named after a quack who went in for all the bizarre remedies of bygone days, such as shock therapy, for example, firing guns next to his patients’ ears unexpectedly, or dropping people into the freezing river as a cure for ague—the cure sounds worse than the disease. As a result, he was in high demand and a royal favourite, in fact he was the court physician, and well in with King James the First, “the wisest fool in Christendom”, but as it was Dr Butler’s medicinal ale that aroused his interest then maybe he wasn’t such a fool after all. Old Dr Butler may have been a charlatan, but he did leave us this terrific old establishment, selling products every bit as medicinal as his original ale.
