At first glance, the Royal Oak appears to be just a little back-street boozer. It isn’t—it’s an award-winning, tremendous little back-street boozer, the only Harvey’s of Lewes tied house in London, serving their outstanding ales as they should be served. The interior and character of the pub seem unspoilt and unchanged, but it isn’t a rough little dive as some of these places could be, quite the opposite in fact. The absence of music, fruit machines and big screens makes this a place for civilised conversations or simply chilling out with a newspaper or a book. It was restored by Harvey’s back to its original format as a Victorian street-corner pub, with the classic division into separate public and saloon bars.
