This narrow little sixteenth century pub has a lot of history. Located next to Wapping Old Stairs, The Town of Ramsgate is claimed to be the site of Execution Dock where many a pirate was hanged in chains, including Captain Kidd. It is said that Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, drank here. The interior is pleasantly light and airy, not dark Olde Worlde as one would imagine. There is a small terrace at the rear, overlooking the river and Wapping Old Stairs. Judge Jeffries, known as “Bloody Jeffries” or “The Hanging Judge”, who liked nothing better than to dine around here as he watched the executions, was arrested here in 1688 after the Glorious Revolution.
