Quite rightly describing itself as a hidden gem, in addition to beer and wine this bar also serves classic cocktails. The space it occupies, beneath and actually a part of the bridge, was originally used for storing coal for the bridge’s engines, unloaded from barges and ferried across the road to the nearby engine rooms. The burning of the coal heated huge boilers driving hydraulic accumulators. The bridge mechanism was converted from coal and steam to oil and electricity in 1974, and the space has had several uses since then, including an unofficial garage for a bridge manager’s car, before being put to better use as the excellent bar we see today.
