So well hidden is this gem that there are people living and working in this area who are unaware of Ye Olde Mitre, a Fullers pub with a rich wood-panelled interior and solid oak armchairs, even though it features in Guy Ritchie’s hilarious British gangster movie Snatch. Queen Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, is said to have danced the maypole around the cherry tree whose stump is in the front bar. This area was the site of Ely Palace, residence of the once rich and powerful Bishops of Ely. The gardens of the beautiful old Church of St. Etheldreda, which lies just behind Ye Olde Mitre, have long been renowned for producing the best strawberries in London, and Strawberry Fayre is held here every June.
